Elton John Reflects on 30th Anniversary of His Sobriety: 'I'm Truly a Blessed Man'

It was a day worth celebrating. Elton John shared on Wednesday (July 29), that he has now been sober for three decades.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

To mark the milestone, the iconic musician shared a series of photos on Instagram. They showed anniversary cards and sobriety chips, a beautiful cake in the shape of "30" and topped with berries, and his Alcoholics Anonymous chip for his three decades sober.

"Reflecting on the most magical day having celebrated my 30th Sobriety Birthday," he began his gallery caption. "I'm truly a blessed man. If I hadn't finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I'd be dead."

The five-time Grammy winner's struggle with substance abuse is well documented. John has spoken openly about it, and his drug use was shown in the biopic Rocketman, which starred Taron Egerton as the "Never Too Late" singer.

"It nearly destroyed my soul," he told CBS News in October 2019 of his addiction. "My soul was black, like a charred piece of steak, until I said, 'I need help.' And suddenly, a little pilot light in my soul came along going, 'Yes, I'm still here. I'm still here. I'm still here. I can still be rescued.'"
