Between the inevitable troll encounters and wildly offensive memes, it can often seem like these online platforms are becoming increasingly divisive and hateful. So it should come as no surprise that many people have decided to abandon these networking services in an attempt to avoid all the negativity. Comedian Leslie Jones left Twitter in 2016 after she was bombarded with racist tweets; Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran recently cleared out her Instagram page after her posts were flooded with racists and sexist comments; and now, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown has reportedly stepped away from Twitter after her image was used in a series of anti-gay tweets.
As pointed out by Deadline, Brown’s official Twitter page, @Milliebbrown, was no longer active as of Wednesday. Though the 14-year-old actress didn’t provide an explanation for her Twitter disappearance, many fans suspected it was due to the countless memes that depicted her as a homophobe.
Apparently, there is a disturbing trend on the Internet which people falsely attribute homophobic quotes to Brown by Photoshopping offensive captions over her photos—usually selfies she posted on social media. These memes have been posted along with the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown.
how do y'all find the "millie bobby brown is homophobic" meme funny? she's a 14 year old girl who's done nothing to deserve these jokes being made about her. the internet has made y'all messed up and tasteless.
Y’all really made Mille Bobby Brown delete Twitter. Those memes got out of hand.
millie bobby brown deactivated her twitter account bc of your dumb homophobic memes, they may be funny to you but some people actually believe theyre real &nobody deserves that type of reputation for something they didn’t do. stop replying with those memes bc theyre not funny
y’all making “”jokes”” about millie bobby brown being homophobic don’t realize you’re like,, legit putting this child’s life in danger
This trend is disturbing on so many levels. Though she carries herself as a particularly mature 14-year-old, people must remember that Brown is still just a kid—a kid who has also advocated for LGBTQ right as well as anti-bullying movements.
Though Brown's decision is understandable, it's a shame that the Twitter trolls have won once again. At least her anti-bullying Twitter account, @Milliestopshate, remains activated.
